Non-toxic steel shot for shotshells are made of cold drawn steel wire, which is a non-toxic alternative to lead.
The shot is ground to a smooth finish removing all irregularities and left clean and free of rust or foreign particles. A light coating of rust preventive lubricant is also applied.
These shots are mostly used for water birds, such as ducks, geese, and swans.
The lead was proven to be a toxic element for the environment, for the wetlands and for their species.
Features
- non-toxic steel shot is the most developed alternative to lead and the least expensive;
- it has much potential for many shutting situations;
- steel shot is a soft iron;
- its density is about 7.8 g/cc, compared to 11 g/cc, so it is much harder than the lead and that is why it needs to be contained in plastic wad to protect barrel walls from scratching or wear;
- its lower density requires some adjustments to be made to the choice of pellet size for each type of shooting as low density shot does not carry the same energy
